BBL. Hourglass. Baddie.
You get the gist.
These terms normalized in society define "beauty." Society is always updating it's standards on what beauty is, I give up! What is true beauty when defined by social media? What is true beauty when carved out by doctors? Tell me.
Confession
I cannot keep comparing my body to the body of girls that I see on social media. Half of the time, their body was altered by the hands of a doctor for an estimated $7,000 or more. Literally, my tuition fees. I found myself comparing, judging, and criticizing the way I looked based on the girls that I saw on social media.
Why do I judge myself?
I know that I was hard on myself because I wanted to be accepted by people, specifically guys. I knew that if I looked a certain way that guys would be more attracted to me but what's the point? Galatians 1:10 states, "For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.' So, who is my focus on? Who am I trying to please? Is the opinion of man more important than that of God? No.
Man's opinion is always changing and they can never be pleased. The same people that I am seeking approval from will also be judged by God at the end of the day. Lord, help me to seek approval from only you and not man.
Making Your Own Body Goals:
Now, I want my own body goals. For anyone else that is tired of comparing themselves to others, I got you. Take a look at a couple ways to create your own body goals:
Positive Affirmations
I encourage you to find a scripture that speaks to you about beauty. Tip: Whenever you find yourself comparing, judging, or criticizing your body repeat that scripture in your mind/speak it aloud too.
Example Scriptures:
1 Timothy 4:8 – “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
1 Samuel 16:7 - But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
2. Limit content intake.
If you notice that you struggle with comparing yourself to other people on social media, then limit the amount of content you take in on a daily basis. The word reminds us to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Proverbs 24:3) and we can do that by changing our mindset on our body image. Believe it or not but we subconsciously compare ourselves when viewing other people on social media.
3. Focus on the positives of your body.
It's easy to point out all the negatives of your body instead of the good. It's important that you speak life over yourself. Speak to what you do see instead of what don't see. Call yourself beautiful, handsome, one of a kind because you are!
You only get one you. One body. One life. Enjoy it.
